Exceptionally fine and rare marine chronometer in original condition by the eminent chronometer maker J.T Winnerl (1799-1886). Silvered dial with roman numerals, outer minute track, subsidiary seconds and Up-and-Down scale, signed WINNERL 159. Solid mahogany case with sliding observation lid having an inset brass lozenge engraved with the number 159. External brass handles, brass bowl and circular gimballed suspension. Movement with fusee and chain with maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement, two-arm balance with cylindrical weights and timing screws. Original ratchet winding and case lock keys.

It is a remarkable survivor considering the working conditions that mid 19thC. chronometers had to endure, it even has it’s original supplier labels stuck to the case. A beautiful and elegant small marine chronometer that looks wonderful on a desk or side table.
