Dent marine chronometer No.51940 with rare staple balance
Mahogany cased marine chronometer by Dent with their rare patent Staple balance. The 3 piece hinged case with an inset ivorine disc with the Dent triangular logo and engraved with the number 51940 TRANSVAAL and the broad arrow mark. There are various repair labels stuck inside the case and one saying “Mean time chronometer Overhauled 30/7/1953”. This is one of the few chronometers that was used to survey the Transvaal at the beginning of the 20thC. The silvered dial is engraved DENT Maker to the QUEEN. 61 STRAND & 4 ROYAL EXCHANGE,LONDON. No.51940 and inside the seconds sub dial TRANSVAAL and the letters T S either side of the broad arrow mark.
